Yaoi, Yuri, and Gender-Benders
You’re probably not going to see another year with so many yaoi, yuri and gender-bending anime series popping out of the fansubbing engines. You might ask: How many series are we talking about? Well, you’ll have to stick till the very end of this post to find out.
In no particular order, we have:
- Ouran High School Host Club
One of the more interesting selections, but that could be due to a small degree of bias resulting from a favourable impression gained from reading the manga’s synopsis (yeah, just the synopsis, haven’t read it yet). It’s also a hybrid of sorts, combining both gender-bender (Haruhi) and yaoi (the rest of the Host Club) elements.
- Princess Princess
Crossdressing is merely the first step, I think. Given our dear crossdressing protagonists, one wonders what can happen in an all-boys school…
- Strawberry Panic
A more explicit version of Maria-sama ga Miteru? Old-school animation, but overall, it’s holding up so far.
- Kashimashi
Just ended (somewhat). We’ve talked about this series already, so all I’ll say is that: I want the complete ending!
- Gakuen Heaven
All-guys high school. Parody-subbed by Live-Evil. ‘Nuff said.
- Meine Liebe Wieder
Another all-guys school (an aristocratic one this time though). IMHO, this season’s plot is more engaging than last season, plus the yaoi-level has been toned down significantly.
- High School Girls
Not yuri at all (I think), but the fanservice says it all.
P.S.: I’m being rather liberal with the use of the terms ‘yaoi’ and ‘ yuri’. Meine Liebe Wieder doesn’t really qualify as yaoi, or even boys’ love (BL)-type anime for that matter (even if it’s subbed by aarinfantasy) , and High School Girls, if not for the explicit fanservice, wouldn’t even come close to yuri.

ooo~ i love my yuri! and sometimes my yaoi too~ i wish doremi and kazenokoe-fansubs would finish up kashimashi… and ur comment about [i want the complete ending]??? i wouldnt qualify it as spoiler, but… oh, well.

sigh… Xabin encodes in MKV, which means i can’t watch it on my TV and iPod, but *gasp* on my PC~!!! will wait patiently until the end of the month…
u shud do a feature on The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya! i say this animu is teh winzz lol! and that is based on the 2nd episode alone.

Lol… you could just hook your PC up to your TV ya know.
Anyway, I’ve watched Haruhi up to ep. 3, and I really can’t say its as l33t as so many have proclaimed it to be. It has a pretty unique plot, and lots of potential, but it doesn’t seem to have that extra “something” pulling me to watch the next ep.
P.S.: Okay, maybe I crapped on that one. I do want to watch ep. 4 just to find out how this alienish thingy progresses.

I actually enjoy All of them. Although I must say I wish PrincessPrincess had a better ending. Strawberry Panic has held my intrest so far but they are leaving too much out from Etoile, and Ouran Host Club has had me rolling since episode 1. Meine Leibe and Meine Leibe Wielder were amzing but the one guy has it right it’s way toned down. Gakuen Heaven though has me rivited, I really hope they hook up. It’s gonna get intresting here soon.

Hehe, despite my lukewarm comments on some of these, I actually enjoy most of them too.
However, I have to admit Gakuen Heaven hasn’t really caught my interest so far. It’s just a bit too plain (nothing particularly unique) for my taste.

Yaoi is a QUITE dramatical saying you know that? O_o Shounen Ai is boy love, and Yaoi means boy SEX x_x
i am not a homofob, i love shounen-ai because they are always so homourus xDD i love Ouran high school host club because of the twin brothers haha xDD
but shoujo aren’t really my thing :/ well, i just get so very jeloux (even though i have a girlfriend) watching beautiful girls run around and kiss each other >_

Kay so wheres Sensitive Pronograph, Gravitation, Enzai, Papa To Kiss In The Dark, Princess Princess, After School In The Teacher’s Lounge, Ai no Kusabi, BeBoy Kidnapp’n Idol, Boku no Pico, Earthian, Haru wo Daiteita, I Shall Never Return, Angel’s Feather, Level C, Mirage of Blaze, Okane ga Nai and Loveless? Theres so many more that you dont have here and Im too lazy to list. The ones you do have a ok though, not a bad little group.

I wouldn’t consider any of the above shonen-ai let alone yaoi, if anything they are merely slashable which tease without the gratification that either yaoi or shonen-ai (somtimes) provide. But that’s just me
