Slam Dunk Art Copied From NBA Photos?

Hmm, always knew that Slam Dunk was too realistic to be true. Just joking. But nevertheless, according to Anime News Network, it appears that Slam Dunk creator Takehiko Inoue plagiarised NBA photographs (and not just one or two either). To see the comparisons between the manga art and actual NBA photographs straight away, you can go here.

The similarities are definitely too close for the allegations of plagiarism to be false. Too bad I don’t understand Japanese because the text in the site that displays the comparison is in Japanese. But the similarities in the pictures are self-evident. See it yourself.

Err, excuse me, but the what’s wrong with that, even if it’s true? SlamDunk is a sport manga/anime so the creator cant just imagine it, he must base on real things somewhere. And those pictures, I believe, are not copyrighted or something. Like you cant do something look like this, or cant draw something look like this because it;s in NBA. That would be ridiculous.

Actually, the practice of copying completely is slightly wrong. If you look at the NBA pictures, there are a number that are copyrighted.

Secondly, it does put the mangaka’s skills and creativity as an artist in a negative light. After all, even though it is always necessary to base things on real life, is it necessary for such complete similarity? In some of the pictures, it’s almost as if the pictures were “traced” – which is why the Geocities site hosting the comparison has a folder name of slamdunk_trace. :)

You are right there^^. But I still wonder, coz I cant understand what it says there anyway… NBA has a long history and many pictures taken, so of course if you lok at 1 pic in SlamDunk, and try to find something similiar in NBA, it wouldnt be so hard?

You’re rite, but would the similarities be as close as the ones in the comparisons at the Geocities site? Normally, I think not, but I guess we’ll never know really.

I THINK THAT ALL OF THE THINGS THAT WE SEE IN REAL LIFE ARE INSPIRATIONS FOR THE ONES THAT DRAW A MANGA SPECAILLY IF THERE IS A GEMA AS FAMOUS AS BASKETBALL SO I THINK THAT INOUE COULD SAW ALL THE GAMES IN HIS CITY AND IN THE NBA AND PLACED THAT SITUATIONS IN SLAM DUNK I DON’T THINK THE NBA OWN THE MOVES THAT THE PLAYER DO IN THE GAMES SO IF ANYONE USES IT THAT MEANS THAT THEY’RE COPYING OR TRACING I THINK THE GAME IS A VERY GOOD GAME AND IF SOMEONE WANTS TO PLAY IT OR DRAW IT OR MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT IT AND IF IT HAS SIMILARITUS TO THE GAMES ON THE NBA THERE JUST IMITATING AND THERES NOTHING WRONG ABOUT IT THE NBA DOESN’T OWN THE MOVES

Hmm, I suppose such an argument does hold water. But I think it is a fallacy to assume that “anyone uses it that means that they’re copying or tracing it”. That’s because other people could draw based on those images, but they wouldn’t have to imitate it so accurately – as I said before.

It’s just the action poses that are similar. The manga did not use copyrighted logos. I think this just shows that poor journalism is used to sell magazines. No one would look twice if it’s just mention the similarity of Slam Dunk with NBA photos. But when the word ‘plagiarism’ is used it would garner a lot more attention.

Who gives a crap if its copied or not, I could care less about the NBA and their copyrights as they’re fucking making way more then whatever this anime has ever seen. And besides this anime doesn’t hurt the NBA in anyway but rather promote it.

The similarities are uncanny because every player that is fundamentally sound does these poses. Players often mimic their idols and have similar stances. Basic basketball technique is same whether you play in Japan or America. You guys are idiots.
