Free 5GB Anime Downloads at Yurikamome

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

Yurikamome.info is giving away 5GB FTP download quotas for its huge anime database to one or two of their forum members monthly. Well, this is clearly an approach meant to attract new forum members and retain their current ones. Moreover, you need to have at least 100 posts before you are eligible for the monthly drawing. That’s a lot, but there seems to be many things to post about since it is a new forum, so it should be okay.

In any case, even if you do not want to join yurikamome.info’s forum, anime.yurikamome.info is an excellent source of free anime downloads. Compared to its previous incarnation, it has improved in terms of download speed - which was definitely sorely lacking before. But due to a large number of free downloaders, speeds have steadily been decreasing. Nevertheless, it is one of the largest repositories of anime around. So, if you can’t find something anywhere else for direct downloads, you can always try it.

Dr. Tenma, a Japanese doctor working in Germany, is a brilliant, and rather handsome young man. Add a beautiful fiancee and prodigious talent as a neurosurgeon and we have a man with a really bright future.

But if that was the case, there would be no story, would there?

One day, a boy in terminal condition arrives for treatment in Tenma’s hospital. Based on the boy’s condition (a bullet in the head), no one else but Tenma would be able to save him. For that reason, Tenma refuses to operate on the town’s Mayor - who arrives for treatment not long after the young boy - and instead continues surgery on the boy. As a result, the boy lives, but the Mayor dies. This prompts his whole life to fall apart.

Because the Mayor was a potential sponsor of the hospital, Tenma loses favour with the hospital Director and thus, is ignored for promotion. His fiancee - who is the Director’s daughter - abandons him. That’s not all though. Murder after murder occurs. Every single one of them beneficial to Tenma, but none leaving evidence that points to him. All this occured right after he had saved the boy, Johan…

Personal Comments:
I found Monster to be an intriguing series, especially the earlier part of the series. In fact, I was interested enough that I downloaded more than 10 episodes a day to watch. Psychological thrillers such as Monster are rare among today’s fansubs, with light-hearted dramas being a particular favourite with producers for some reason.

But for some reason, I’m losing steam. The only reason why I want to continue watching Monster is to see whether Johan eventually gets killed (this isn’t a spoiler, really). And that’s wierd because its about now (i.e. mid-series) that the mystery starts getting revealed. Maybe it is because I saw too many episodes, too fast. I’ll give it a rest, for now.

In any case, Monster is definitely an anime to watch, simply because its different from the rest on the fansub market at the moment.

Anime on IRC?

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

I’ve always used IRC (Internet Relay Chat) to download my anime whenever I can. IRC downloads, while theoretically (based on IRC code) not as fast as FTPs or direct HTTP downloads, tends to be a rich source of anime downloads. If you do not already use IRC, it would be good to learn, even if your Bittorrent works fine. You’ll find not only faster downloads (for certain anime) but IRC is also a less memory intensive software (compared to BT).

In this post, I will assume that you already know how to use IRC XDCC bots and point you to a few XDCC lists that I particularly love, i.e. lists from fast and fat XDCC bots. Maybe if there is a demand, I’ll put up an illustrated IRC anime download tutorial (actually, there’s quite a few on the the web already).

XDCC Bot Lists:

1) http://webpost.net/ao/AonE/
- The bot list of AnimeOne’s “premier” xdcc bots. Although the bots have a minimum download speed that you must adhere to, you’ll find that the bots are the unparalled archives of AnimeOne episodes. In fact A|Distro has “interesting” (e.g. popular non-anime TV series episodes for example) non-AnimeOne downloads too.

2) http://www.anime-hq.org/xdccinfo.php
- This is AnimeHQ’s site for their XDCC bot lists. There are many good bots here filled with high quality anime.

3) http://www.shinsen-subs.org/?page=bots
- Shinsen-Subs XDCC bot lists. There are tons of good bots here for all the Shinsen-Subs fansubs (which is a lot, mind you).

So, these are a few lists that I use. There are many more, but I just wanted to share a few to test the waters, so to speak.

Changed Adverts

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

I removed the Google Adsense advertisements because I realised that I had not read the Adsense Terms of Service properly. It states that Adsense adverts are not to be shown on pages with video. Since I wouldn’t want to get banned by Adsense, I removed the ads and replaced them with Clicksor.

But I find Clicksor’s contextual advertising (i.e. the underlining and linking of words in my posts) very irritating, but I don’t think they can be removed. I really need to find a more suitable advertising system to finance the downloads server. Darn.

But at least now, there will only be one banner advert at the top since Clicksor permits only 1 advert per page.

RorikonJyanai Anime Direct Downloads?

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

For those who are active in downloading anime fansubs (or otherwise) from IRC (Internet Relay Chat) , you must have come across either the (in)famous public unlicensed anime FTP server or the XDCC bot (i.e. something like a download server on IRC) managed by Misha-Su. For the uninitiated, more information about these can be obtained from RorikonJyanai.

Recently, it seems they have expanded in providing anime fansub direct downloads at http://www.animeblues.com. There is about 380 episodes online on a 10 mbit line (I think) there. Up to 15 people can download at any one time.

But, be careful because IP banning on that site is not uncommon if you break the rules (just like the FTP). The problem is that at the moment, I can’t find any rules regarding the direct download site. So, to be safe, make sure you don’t download more than 1 file at a time. If the FTP server’s rules apply to the site, it also means that after downloading a file, you must take a break of 20 minutes+ to allow others a chance.

Overall, just don’t abuse the service. It is an excellent and most importantly, free service.

Another Japanese Name Generator

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

Well, I was interested, so… This one seems to provide a greater variety of Japanese translations. Bear with me for today. Anyways, I’ll put up the ending video of Trinity Blood tomorrow, or maybe earlier.

Your Japanese Name Is…

Senichi Rokujochigusa

That was with my last name, then my first name. Now for the other way round:

What Your Japanese Name?

Saturday, December 17th, 2005

Hmm, not sure if you’ve done this already, but this was new for me.

My japanese name is 猿渡 Saruwatari (monkey on a crossing bridge) 駿 Shun (fast person).
Take your real japanese name generator! today!
Created with Rum and Monkey’s Name Generator Generator.

Well, basically that’s my Japanese name based on my English one (or more accurately, my Chinese one), based on this nifty Japanese name generator over at Rum and Monkey.

But I wonder how it works. I get Sawatari Shun by entering my last name then first name. If instead I enter my first name and then my last name, this is what I get:

My japanese name is 石丸 Ishimaru (round stone) 亜門 Amon (asian gates).

Wierd. What about you?
